Autumn Maintenance for Sedum Roofs

A sedum roof...for example one created using Enviromat sedum matting....is generally pretty low maintenance.  But it does need a little bit of attention in spring and autumn to make sure it keeps giving you all the benefits that you installed it for.

Good drainage is crucial for the long term health and vitality of sedum plants.  Please make sure that your drainage outlets and gutters are kept clear and that rainwater and melted snow can escape from your green roof unhindered.

Autumn leaves; if autumn leaves accumulate on your roof they will restrict airflow and block sunlight from the sedum plants.  Sedums need both!  Piles of leaves on the roof can also upset drainage systems and if allowed to rot down they'll create a great place for weeds to grow in; please be sure to clear away any leaves that have come to rest on your green roof.

Weeds; Summer 2012 was pretty wet and not all weeds on lightweight sedum roofs will have been killed by hot dry weather and lack of water.  Expect to see a little bit of grass on your sedum roof and maybe some moss but you don't want to have the likes of tree seedlings of buddleja growing up there...they have the sort of root systems that could damage waterproofing.  Pull them out while you're up on the roof clearing drains and moving dead leaves.

Any problems please please please give Enviromat a call.  We have been growing sedum matting for almost a decade and a half and we've seen just about everything.   Our Robert is viewed as a bit of an industry expert and he can give you some really sound advice on what to do if you're worried.  We also have a green roof maintenance division, so if you need a hand we can send someone out at a VERY reasonable price.  01842 828266 or email angelal@qlawns.co.uk
Oh....expect your sedum roof to start changing colour during autumn and into winter.  The leaves will take on a reddish hue and they'll look as though they've shrunk a bit.  This is normal...it's what the plants do to cope with winter weather.   If you're worried, email us a picture or give us a call so we can put your mind at rest.
